Under the Silver Lake
After his brilliant supernatural horror film It Follows, the American director David Robert Mitchell set out on a hallucinogenic trip around Los Angeles: the meandering modern noir comedy drama Under the Silver Lake centres on the 33-year-old Sam, who embarks on a quest to find Sarah, his mysterious neighbour, after she goes missing. As he combs through L.A. searching for any kind of clue, he stumbles upon secrets, scandals and sinister conspiracies, lurking in the depths of the City of Angels. A hypnotic and funny thriller of an almost Lynchean stripe is driven by the obsessive protagonist, as well as an exquisite soundtrack, action twists and numerous references to pop culture, which together make up a secret history of L.A. The film is also a subversive plaything paying an unconventional tribute to the Hollywood heyday.
